Battle is one in a series called Life Vodcasts by Strephon Kaplan-Williams. This series has started today, October 4, 2006, and will last as long as it will last.
These are not the exact words of the vodcast, which is delivered orally by Strephon. He writes here the principles and practices upon which he basis his talk.
Conflicts are inherent to life itself, so we do well to learn how to battle, to stand up for our rights and needs, and yet also build cooperative unities out of conflicts.
Two ways for doing battle dominate in human society. One actually dominates, and that is the win-lose competitive model in which conflicts are resolved by one group defeating the other. This is not the best system because such conflicts do not leave all parties in a win-win situation building life resources and energy together by sharing responsibilities, resources and benefits.
The competitive, win-lose model is energy-wasteful because one side wins the resources available while the other side is defeated and loses out on an equal share of the resources available.
This is seen clearly in tennis tournaments in which the matches progress and only the winners go on, gradually eliminating each other until there is only one ultimate winner who gets paid a lot of money. The loser at the top gets half of what the winner gets. Those who lose earlier get far less of the tournament purse. For one hundred top players there are thousands of other tennis players trying to be top players. These people, the back-bone of the tennis sports scene get paid very little money, not really enough to live on. They are unfairly paid. They are the slaves of the tennis organization. This is the win-lose system in which only the top ten percent get well paid for their efforts. This illustrates the nature of the win-lose system in human culture. The winner wins too much and the loser loses too much. Imagine what it is like to teach the children of the world that to get ahead in life you have to both not lose and also win in life. This dooms nine tenths of the population to a disappointing life.
In contrast the other way to resolve conflicts is the win-win and the lose-lose system in which both parties seek to balance each other and find a third, new and resolving way to end their conflicts together.
This means that all parties to a conflict should equally benefit from the gains resulting from settling their conflict and also take equal responsibility in sustaining the loses resulting from their conflict.
This is a cooperative system in which it is mutually beneficial for all parties involved to settle their conflicts and to have the benefits of their efforts and changes in setting their conflicts cooperatively and creatively.
However, the world is still unconsciously involved in a win-lose, competitive system that causes much stress and extra destruction in the one world in which we all live.
There are many, many examples of this, such as cutting down rain forest trees by a few rich people to sell to rich people in other countries. Such destruction of the natural habitat hurts the majority of the people because of the destruction of the environment and the threat to the world’s climate caused by cutting down masses of trees that serve to regulate the climate of the earth in nature’s natural ecology.
A more evolved way for societies to live life is to cooperate together in sharing the world’s resources fairly and also taking on equal responsibility for the world’s problems.
These are examples. The principles for doing battle are as follows:
-Balance the energy
-Win-win-lose-lose, not win-lose.
-Create the third point that unites the opposites.
-Don’t look for problems, look for solutions and the problems will
find you!
